DNA Sequence Published

SMCC graduate Lorraine Bisson has published a partial sequence for the Cytochrome oxidase subunit I mitochondrial gene from menhaden. Menhaden are a relative of the sea herring and migrate into the Gulf of Maine in late spring. Recent appearances of juvenile menhaden in the Gulf of Maine have led some to wonder if menhaden are spawning in the gulf. Lorraine has been trying to compare mitochondrial sequences from juveniles collected in the Gulf of Maine to sequences from juveniles collected in North Carolina. Lorraine is starting classes at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine this fall. She plans to continue her research there. The sequence is listed on the National Center for Biotechnology Information website (www.ncbi.nim.nih.gov). The accession number is DQ867533.
